Acid occurs when the stomach produces excess hydrochloric acid, which causes a burning sensation in the stomach, chest, and throat area known as heartburn. The acids and food are expelled into the esophagus in gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Fatty and spicy foods, as well as the Helicobacter pylori bacterium, are the main causes of this condition.

Chronic acidity can cause esophageal cancer. These five home remedies listed below can treat the acid to some extent.

1. Baking soda

Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, is used as a remedy for acute acid reflux in all households. It is alkaline in nature and neutralizes the acids when mixed in water, but is a short-term agent. Patients with chronic cases of excess acidity should consult a gastroenterologist. Baking soda is also high in salts, so it’s not ideal for people with high blood pressure.

2. Cumin

In Ayurvedic medicine, cumin or jeera in water can help reduce acidity and puffiness. Cumin is naturally alkaline and therefore neutralizes the acids like baking soda. It also helps in relieving indigestion and is effective in helping control blood pressure. Studies have shown that black seed extracts can help heal stomach ulcers.

3. ginger

Ginger, like cumin, is alkaline and helps reduce acidity. Acid reflux causes a condition known as esophagitis, or inflammation of the lining of the esophagus. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that help treat stomach ulcers.

4. Tulsi

Studies have shown that tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, has healing properties that can help treat stomach ulcers. Consumption of tulsi also leads to increased secretion of cellular mucus, which protects the lining of the stomach and esophagus from ulcer damage. Tulsi also contains anti-inflammatory properties like ginger.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric contains a yellow colored compound called curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties that help protect the stomach from excessive acid secretions. Curcumin is also an antioxidant and effective in treating stomach ulcers.
