Beebe Healthcare and Beebe Medical Group announced that Dr. Tarek Waked, a board certified general and bariatric surgeon who will lead the Beebe Center for Weight Loss Surgery.

Waked has performed more than 2,000 successful bariatric surgeries during his career and is an expert in pod gastrectomy, gastric bypass and bile duct-pancreas diversion with duodenal switch procedures. He also performs revision surgery for sleeves and bypass, as well as general surgeries such as minimally invasive colon surgery, hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery, and anti-reflux surgery.

Kimberly Hyatt, RD, LDN, a registered nutritionist specializing in the treatment of obesity, joins Waked at the Beebe Center for Weight Loss Surgery. Hyatt will serve as the program manager and nutritionist. In 2007 she received a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Her Master of Public Health is due to be completed at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her dissertation deals with the relationship between genetic environmental factors and obesity. She has worked extensively in acute care, intensive care, and community nutrition. For the past five years she has focused on the medicine of obesity.

Waked graduated from Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia with a degree in general surgery. During his years of training, Waked received several awards for his skills and knowledge in surgery.

After training in general surgery, Waked entered the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.
