Les Mills 2021 Global Fitness Report sheds light on how the world will work after the pandemic, with live workouts and “omnichannel fitness” that will prevail.

Gyms around the world will recover from the pandemic, and fitness fans are eager to get back to working out live with friends.
That emerges from an important new report highlighting a global “live revival” with fitness fans flocking to facilities after months of lonely home training for more motivation and social connection.
The Les Mills 2021 Global Fitness Report – with insights from 12,157 consumers on five continents – examines how the pandemic has changed our fitness habits and highlights the trends that will shape our workouts for years to come.
Despite fears that the COVID-inspired home fitness boom would spell the end for fitness facilities, research suggests that the majority of members are returning to their gym. The report finds that gyms around the world have rebounded sharply since reopening, with class occupancy at 120% pre-COVID levels in markets where capacity restrictions were lifted.
After a year of forced home training, the appetite for live group fitness experiences increases as 85% of gym goers are interested in trying live classes at their facility.
Two-thirds of gym members (67%) say they prefer to work out in groups, while live gym classes are almost twice as popular as online classes with a live stream (44% of members versus 23%).
Rockstar instructors are identified as the most important factor for gym goers when choosing a live class, preferred by 28%, ahead of the quality of the music (24%) and the type of teaching (21%). Quality Instructors are cited as a key component of live resuscitation and meet the strong consumer demand for added motivation and deeper connection in their workouts.
“After months of being stuck at home, people can’t wait to go back to fitness facilities and enjoy their favorite workouts with familiar faces,” says Phillip Mills, Founder and CEO of Les Mills.
“Similar to bars, restaurants and sporting events, fitness is experiencing a real ‘live revival’ as people make up for lost time with a renewed appreciation for real social environments.
“A lot of people have missed the thrill of a busy class led by a rock star instructor and the added motivation of exercising with others.
“But that doesn’t mean home workouts will go away when we’re through the pandemic. The digital fitness boom and the increase in home work mean that consumers are taking an omnichannel approach to their workouts, combining exciting live workouts at the gym with the convenience of digital workouts at home. “
The impact of the pandemic on the fitness landscape is evident throughout the report. The digital fitness boom is expected to continue as 80% of gym members plan to continue using digital workouts after the pandemic.
“Omnichannel Fitness” – a mixture of workouts in the fitness studio and digital home training – is expected to gain traction after the pandemic, with the majority of those exercising (59%) favoring a 60:40 split between fitness and home training.
