After a challenging 2020 due to the lockdown of gyms across Australia, Genesis Health and Fitness General Manager Ian Jensen-Muir announced that the group was off to a good start in 2021.
As of late February, membership on the national network of Genesis Health and Fitness franchises was back to 96% of pre-determined levels, including Victoria, which has been severely impacted by expanded bans.
Jensen-Muir (pictured below) pointed out that this is an accomplishment that the entire team is proud of. “Gyms were one of the hardest hit as they were among the first to close and the last to reopen and even open.” This year we’re facing more isolated closings.
“Expanding our program online through the Home Fitness Network has been key to breaking the embargo and continues to help us manage hotspots and government lockdowns that will continue this year.”
Looking ahead, the Belgravia Health and Fitness business is focused on innovation in the club as well as more flexible franchise options. Jensen-Muir added: “From a member’s point of view, there are two key pivotal points that we have already made for 2021 – strengthening the community and expanding the fitness environment online. Community has always been an important part of our offering at Genesis Health + Fitness, but it’s more important today than ever.
“This year we would also like to implement important innovations in the entire network, which combine more services and support under one roof of the fitness room and use the growing interest of the market in wellness and a balanced relationship with one’s own approach to health.
“We’re going to introduce technologies like body scanners and massage guns. It’s about convenience and about making it easier for members to achieve their goals without having to go to different providers in different locations.
“There will also be new offers in the wellness area.”
For its franchise companies, the company is developing a number of innovative offers with additional technology and flexibility for new franchisees who work in a model with a reduced footprint.
Here Jensen-Muir notes that “some of the new location options may be up to a fifth the size of some of our larger facilities and will focus on offering only the core” hero “elements of the Genesis model.
“This affordable option will appeal to many new franchisees and will open up additional opportunities in regional Australia as well.”
Overall, Jensen-Muir is very optimistic about the group’s outlook in 2021 and concludes: “I think this perspective is shared by most in the industry who have been ready to innovate.
“While 2020 was particularly challenging because what was ahead of us was new, this year is a different story as we now know a lot more about what we’re up against.”
The group’s portfolio includes Genesis Health + Fitness, Personal Training from the Coaching Zone Group and the indoor obstacle course Ninja Parc.
Connected to JUMP! Swim Schools and BK’s Gym and Swim, Belgravia Health and Fitness support more than 100 franchise locations across the country.
