Loretta Devine is the latest star to appear on TV One’s Uncensored, where she talked about the ups and downs of her four decades-long career.
Despite having over 150 roles under her belt, Gloria Matthews was one of the most popular characters she played Waiting for the exhale. On Uncensored, she pondered working with Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, and her love interest in the film Gregory Hines. She said they were wonderful to work with, even with Hines, who encouraged her to lose weight so she could improve her career.
“I remember him telling me, ‘As soon as this movie is over, you have to lose all the weight so you can move up to the next category.’ I don’t know which category that was because I never lost weight like he said, ”she laughed.
Despite the insensitive comment, Devine said she and Hines always cultivated a fraternal friendship. Her weight didn’t hinder her career either, and she continued to thrive.
Devine also spoke about how Hollywood is handling colorism for which she was credited top Lee for Growing awareness Above. She said that while it exists across the industry, she said she was more focused on her craft than worrying about encountering this problem in the television and film industries.
“I’ve never thought so much about how I look,” she said. “It was always about my talent and I think I got that mentality about things when I was much younger. So I didn’t think about what color I was. “
TV One’s Uncensored will air on August 29 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
